How customs clearance works in Brazil today
Import and export processes are filed on the Portal Único Siscomex.
- Exports: Single Export Declaration (DU-E)
- Imports: Import Declaration (DI), transitioning to the Single Import Declaration (Duimp)
- Licenses and approvals from agencies such as MAPA, ANVISA and INMETRO, when required
- Calculation and payment of import duties and taxes
How long does clearance take?
There is no single timeframe for customs clearance.
Timing depends on the type of operation, document quality, the inspection channel assigned, any inspections, required approvals, cargo type, transport mode and clearance location. Reviewing documents before shipment is what contributes most to a smooth process.
Inspection channels
After filing, the import declaration is assigned to an inspection channel.
- Green: release without document or physical inspection
- Yellow: document review
- Red: document review and physical inspection of the goods
- Grey: document review, physical inspection and a special customs control procedure
