Transport modes

Which international mode makes sense for your cargo?

A comparison of the main modes by transit time, cost, ideal volume and best use case.

Comparison of international transport modes
Modal Avg. transit time Relative cost Ideal volume / weight Best use case
Ocean 25–45 days Low Large volumes and heavy cargo Large-scale import/export (FCL and LCL).
Air 1–7 days High Low volume e alto valor agregado Urgency, perishables, samples and high-value cargo.
Road / Cabotage 3–15 days Medium Medium volume on regional routes Mercosur, coastal cabotage and domestic distribution.

Transit times and costs are average market references and vary by route, origin, destination and cargo characteristics.

Vision Log specialty

Coordinating operations that combine different modes.

Many foreign-trade operations combine two or more modes — ocean, air, road, rail or inland waterway. Vision Log coordinates these steps with carriers, airlines, hauliers and terminals, following each leg from the start to the end of the chain.

In practice, this means using the best of each mode: the economy of ocean freight on long sea legs, the speed of air on critical connections and the reach of road and cabotage on the last mile. The result is a route planned for the cargo, with fewer handling steps and more predictable timing.

  • Integrated coordination of legs and providers, with visibility of operational milestones.
  • Planned route that balances cost, time and safety according to the cargo.
  • Global reach: operations connecting Brazil to suppliers and markets on every continent.

Trust & Compliance AEO (OEA) certification · in progress

Vision Log is in the AEO (OEA) certification process.

OEA — Operador Econômico Autorizado is the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service program that certifies foreign-trade companies demonstrating compliance with security and customs-compliance criteria. It follows the World Customs Organization’s AEO (Authorized Economic Operator) concept.

Vision Log is currently in the OEA certification process. Once certified, applicable benefits will depend on the certification modality granted and on the relevant Mutual Recognition Agreements.

Current status: OEA certification in progress with the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service.

Differentiated customs treatment

Certified companies may receive differentiated treatment in clearance, according to the modality granted.

Supply-chain security

Preparing for OEA involves documented processes, cargo control and risk management.

Predictability

Standardized processes contribute to more predictable operations.

Mutual recognition

In countries with a Mutual Recognition Agreement in force with Brazil, the certification may be recognized by that customs authority.

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers about logistics & foreign trade.

The essentials on foreign-trade operations, freight forwarding, customs clearance and logistics outsourcing.

What does a logistics and foreign-trade operator do?

A logistics and foreign-trade operator coordinates the import and export chain: freight forwarding, customs clearance, transport, insurance and documentation.

In practice, it acts as a coordination point between exporter, importer, ocean carriers, airlines, hauliers, terminals and customs, so that goods leave the origin and reach the destination with time, cost and compliance under control.

  • Quoting and booking international freight;
  • Customs clearance and duty management;
  • Cargo insurance and risk management;
  • Warehousing, handling and distribution.

What is the difference between freight forwarding and customs clearance?

Freight forwarding organizes the international transport of the cargo; customs clearance handles the release of the goods with the Brazilian customs authority.

They are complementary steps. The forwarder negotiates space with carriers and airlines and coordinates transport documents. Customs clearance files the declaration on the Portal Único Siscomex — DU-E for exports; DI or Duimp for imports — and follows duties and release.

How long does customs clearance take in Brazil?

There is no single timeframe: it depends on the operation, documents, inspection channel, any inspections, required approvals, cargo type and transport mode.

After filing, the import declaration is assigned to an inspection channel:

  • Green: release without inspection;
  • Yellow: document review;
  • Red: document and physical inspection;
  • Grey: document and physical inspection plus a special control procedure.

What is project cargo (OOG) and how is it transported?

Project or OOG (Out of Gauge) cargo exceeds the dimensions of a standard container and requires dedicated equipment and logistics engineering.

These are machines, industrial structures and oversized or indivisible equipment. Transport uses flat rack, open top, break bulk or specialized vessels, with route studies, permits and lifting plans.

Is it worth outsourcing international logistics?

For many companies, yes. Outsourcing can improve operational control, process standardization and access to specialists.

An in-house foreign-trade structure requires specialists, systems and constant updates. A specialized operator brings method, freight-negotiation scale and technical follow-up. Each party’s legal and tax responsibilities remain as defined by law and contract.
